Exploring Belgium Part 3… In Bruges!
01/05/2023
Of course we had to go to Bruges! Not only is it one of the main places to visit, but I had to see if I sided with Brendan Gleeson or Colin Farrell. In the end… it’s a pretty nice place 🙂

Off to Antwerp! Today was off to the diamond capital of the world to have a nice relaxing Sunday to see what more Belgium had to offer. I have to say I was loving the more relaxed vibe along with the gorgeous architecture… and the beer 🙂

Hamburg was all done and it was time to move on. Most excitingly it was to meet up with Kate in… Belgium! I was on an early morning flight to Brussels and then jumped on a train to Ghent where we were basing ourselves for a few days.
All the travel went safe and sound and smooth, and by late morning we were back together in Ghent!
No rest time… just a quick shower and time to wander the old town in Ghent.

I made my way from Milan to Hamburg a couple of days later than expected due to Italian strikes, but I made it on Sunday afternoon, just in time to start a busy week at the CHI Conference on the Monday. It meant I didn’t have as much time to explore Hamburg, so after arriving I got in touch with my work friends and off we went to explore!
The rest of the week was mostly conference but with bits of getting around the city here and there. The cycle was usually conference -> dinner -> party -> rest -> repeat 😛
Here are the highlights! All of this was squeezed into a couple of hours here and there 😉
1. Miniatur Wunderland!

2. Iconic Sights

3. St Pauli and Reeperbahn

4. Random

Off on the next part of my research sabbatical! This was a reasonably quick visit to some colleagues at the University of Milan. Unlike Seattle, this was just a week and a half to catch up and discuss some future work.
While there I got to explore Milan. It was my first visit which was exciting and it also coincided with Design Week. Ha!
So here is a bunch of the usual tourist pics, along with some Design Week shenanigans. Oh, it was also my birthday during this time, so I went to the original Campari bar and had some cocktails 🙂
The highlights…
1. Duomo

2. Castle

3. San Siro!

4. Design Week

5. Campari Cocktails

6. Random

7. The Last Supper

8. Fondazione Prada and Bar Luce (Wes Anderson designed cafe!)
